Most of us have heard of the YA Crush Tourney. This is an amazing YA book event in the blogosphere. And if you don't know what it is, well, it's fairly easy to figure out.
It's fun. I like it. But some of the nominations just don't make sense to me.
This has nothing to do with me liking a character or not. The simple fact is I don't understand how an incestuous rapist is seen as a "crush." Rapists are not crush-worthy. Not even attempted rapists.
I don't understand why Sebastian is on that list. I'm not saying I think his storyline in the book should never have been written or that he's a character you can't like because of what he did. I'm saying he tried to rape his sister. I'm saying that it's not okay to show that someone who could do something like that could be considered a "crush" and grouped with the other characters on that list. There's a large difference between being a flawed character like most of the boys on that list - Noah Shaw, Will Herondale, basically everyone else - and being a rapist. (Also let's not forget that Sebastian tried to kill basically everyone.)
This isn't a post for you to argue about why you think it's okay for Sebastian to be on there. You're probably not going to get me to agree no matter what you say. You can like Sebastian. You can feel bad for him. You can want to understand him. Even I don't hate him. But this is basically saying that it's okay to consider a rapist/attempted rapist (which is really all the same, if you ask me) a "crush." And I don't understand how that can be okay.
I realize the list is based on nominations and it's supposed to be fair and everything. But I think something like this should trump fairness.
You want to say I'm over-reacting? Fine. But I'm not the only one that feels this way. And if you agree, please, please say something about it. Sebastian should not be on that list. From what I've heard, neither should Jordan because he's abusive. And please consider who you nominate. Just because you like a character doesn't mean they should be seen as a "crush."
The YA Sisterhood holds a Villain Tourney in the fall. Why can't you just vote for Sebastian then? When it actually fits the description?
